Heng and Ha

The Snorter and the Ha-er

Temple gate guardians who knock souls out with a snort or a shout, from Fengshen Yanyi.

Heng and Ha are the two temple gate guardians whose names come from the sounds of their powers: Zheng Lun snorts a white light from his nose that plucks away souls, while Chen Qi shouts a yellow breath from his mouth that shakes them loose. In the novel they serve opposite armies before both join the canonization list. Carved on either side of monastery gates, they still guard the threshold with open mouths.
