Qianliyan, the Thousand-Mile Eye, and Shunfenger, the With-the-Wind Ear, see and hear across a thousand li. In the Fengshen Yanyi they are the brothers Gao Ming and Gao Jue who spy on the Zhou camp; in the cult of Mazu they stand at the goddess’s side as her scouts over sea and sky, their bulging eyes and cupped ears turned toward every sailor in danger.
