Youth who visited fifty-three teachers in the Avatamsaka Sutra, now Guanyin’s attendant.

Sudhana, the youth of good wealth, appears in the Avatamsaka Sutra as a seeker who visits fifty-three teachers in search of enlightenment. Guided by the goddess Manjushri and finally by Maitreya, he enters the tower of the universe and understands that all worlds are one. In Chinese art he stands at Guanyin’s side as the model of the earnest student, hands pressed together in respect.
