Zhao Gongming began as a mountain immortal in the Fengshen Yanyi and was canonized by Jiang Ziya as the Marshal of the Golden Dragon and Jade Tiger, commanding the four spirits of treasure, rarity, wealth and market. The people made him their Martial God of Wealth, and on the fifth day of the New Year families welcome his arrival with firecrackers and offerings — the busiest day in the calendar of fortune.
