Chenghuang is the divine beast of the White People’s land in the Shanhaijing, shaped like a fox with horns on its back. Riding it was said to grant a life of two thousand years. Later poets and storytellers borrowed the image under the name Feihuang, and the phrase “flying yellow” came to mean meteoric success.
