Fengxi was the monstrous boar of the age of Yao, trampling the fields until the hero Houyi seized it in the mulberry grove and ended its ravages. Its capture completed the great roll of Houyi’s labors, and the gratitude of the people made the archer the natural leader of the age — a monster’s death that helped found a kingdom.
