One-Winged Birds

Birds with one wing and one eye each that fly only together, origin of the paired-lovers symbol.

Manman is the bird of Chongwu Mountain with one wing and one eye, able to fly only when two birds join together. Their appearance foretells great floods. Later poets transformed this strange necessity into the “one-winged birds” of married love, who can rise only side by side.
