Pulao, the son of the dragon who loves to cry out, crowns the great bronze bells of temples as their hanging knob. Legend says he fears the whale, so the striking beam is carved as a whale to make him roar — and the deeper the beast’s cry, the more magnificent the bell sounds through the hills.
