Cangjie Invents Writing

Millet Rains, Ghosts Weep

The Yellow Emperor’s historian Cangjie created characters by observing nature, opening the age of writing.

Cangjie, the historian of the Yellow Emperor, studied the tracks of birds and beasts, the patterns of turtle shells and the shapes of mountains, and from them made the first written signs. When the characters were complete, grain rained from heaven and ghosts wailed in the night — for writing gave men a memory longer than life. The tale makes script a gift torn from the natural world and turned against forgetting.
