Butterfly Spring

Butterfly Spring

Bai Legend of Dali

Lovers leap into the pool and rise as butterflies, naming Dali’s famous Butterfly Spring.

The Bai maiden Wengu and the hunter Xialang fall in love, but a powerful lord wants her for himself. Hunted to the edge of the pool, the lovers leap in together rather than be parted. From the water rise two butterflies, and the following spring thousands of butterflies gather over Dali in answer — naming the Butterfly Spring and its festival of lovers.
